What could be worse than a throbbing toothache? You want relief, but the words "root canal" can seem daunting. Luckily, your Fresno dentist, Dr. Curt Posey, helps scores of individuals with tooth pain, and if you need root canal therapy, he provides care that is both comfortable and effective. Root canals stop toothaches and preserve a tooth for years—read below to learn more!
What is a root canal?
Root canal therapy removes inflamed and diseased pulp from inside a tooth. In root canal cases, blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that have been damaged through injury, infection, or decay have broken down and become inflamed and infiltrated with bacteria. Pressure builds up inside the tooth and results in:
Accomplished in two visits to your dentist's Fresno office, root canal therapy cleans and disinfects the tooth, seals it, and crowns it. In short, treatment fully restores the tooth, sparing it from extraction and you from the needless problems of tooth replacement, bone loss, impaired oral function, and more.
Dr. Posey looks at the tooth and X-rays it to determine if root canal therapy would be effective. If the answer is yes, he numbs the tooth with local anesthetic and drains all infected material from the inside canal, after which the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Then, he places a filling or temporary cap over the tooth to protect it as it heals.
After a week to ten days, you'll return to the office. Dr. Posey will check the health of your tooth, and if all is OK, he'll remove the cap and install a natural-looking porcelain crown.
That's all there is to it! The vast majority of root canals succeed and preserve teeth indefinitely. Your tooth will look and feel perfectly normal again, and your pain will be gone!
