People have been replacing their missing teeth throughout the course of history. There is evidence of our ancestors using stone, bone, gold and animal teeth in place of their missing teeth. As far back as 2500 BC, the ancient Egyptians had dental devices resembling modern day dental bridges to fill in their gaps. In modern times, the most efficient and permanent way to replace your missing tooth is with a dental implant. From the office of Dr. Curt Posey in Fresno, CA, here is some information on dental implants.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a dental restoration to replace a missing tooth. However, what makes implants special is that, unlike a dental bridge or dentures, they also replace the tooth’s root. A biocompatible titanium cylinder integrated into the jawbone below the missing tooth serves as a sturdy foundation for the replacement tooth. Additionally, implants are made to last a lifetime with the proper care. This makes a strong at-home oral care routine crucial to the life of your implant. Brush twice daily and floss at least once. Also, be sure to see your Fresno dentist at least twice a year for regular examinations and cleanings.
What can dental implants do?
Implants can replace one or many teeth depending on the situation and the placement of the implants themselves. Single tooth replacements require a single implant situated in the tooth’s socket and a single crown to replace the tooth. However, you may choose to replace several of your teeth using strategically placed implants throughout your mouth. For example, if you are missing three teeth in a row, two implants on either side holds a dental bridge made up of three prosthetic teeth in place. This means your bridge attaches to the implant rather than your healthy natural teeth, leaving them intact. Additionally, if you are missing all your teeth, four implants placed along the arch hold a full denture permanently in place. Removable dentures can also be latched onto dental implants to secure them into place.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants, unlike dentures, are permanent and effective. Your implants will look, feel and function exactly like your natural teeth. This allows you to eat the foods you love and speak freely without the fear of your dentures moving around or falling out. Care for your implants exactly as you would your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing and dental examinations. Finally, dental implants restore your smile, leaving you looking great and feeling even better.
