About Dental Implants
Dental implants act just like a tooth’s root, and hold an artificial tooth securely in place. A dental implant consists of three parts: the implant itself, an abutment (or connector) and a dental crown. The implant looks like a metal screw or post and it’s usually made from titanium. An abutment is placed on top of the implant to help connect the implant to the dental crown.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
If you’ve looked into dentures or dental bridges, you’ve probably been weighing your options against dental implants. Dental implants:
- Significantly improve and restore your smile
- Are designed to last a lifetime
- Don’t require special care or treatment
- Are easy to clean and care for
- Don’t need to be replaced (unlike bridges or dentures)
- Are strong and resilient
- Become permanent dental structures within your mouth
- Preserve jawbone health and facial structure
- Promote the growth of new jawbone cells
- Prevent bone loss
Dental Implant Candidates
Dental implants can be a wonderful way to replace missing teeth. However, the procedure isn’t for everyone. Patients who opt for implants should be in good health and not dealing with untreated gum disease, decay or suffering from an uncontrolled chronic disease like diabetes. Patients should also have a strong, healthy immune system.
We also highly recommend that dental implant candidates be non-smokers, as smokers are more likely to have implant failure. Furthermore, children and early teens are not appropriate candidates for dental implants, as their jawbone has not fully developed.
